Course Sequence and Schedule Guide

The Department of Communication Undergraduate Advising Offices are located in III-5119. Departmental advisor is available to assist you with questions regarding the major requirements, course schedule, CORE/GENED requirements etc. All students should meet with their advisor every semester.

To set up an advising appointment, please submit an email to us adhering to the proper guidelines listed below:

  1. Address your email to "rnuredin@umd.edu".
  2. Within the subject line please write "Academic Advising".
  3. Please send a courteous salutation to our programs Assistant Director, "Mrs. Raimonda Nuredini".
  4. To begin your email, please include your full name, your UID number, and what semester you are currently enrolled in at UMD (i.e. 1st semester, 2nd semester, 3rd semester student...etc).
  5. Within your email, please include your availability for an appointment that week or the upcoming week.
  6. When ready, please submit your email to our department and Assistant Director Raimonda Nuredini will respond to you in a timely manner regarding scheduling an advising appointment.

Special Topic Courses

COMM398W – Web Design: a basic to intermediate introduction to web design. Students will begin by developing a simple personal web site using CSS-based layouts, and progress to more complex CSS3-driven layouts. In addition to the basics of web creation, content, layout and design, this course will also emphasize basic computer skills and file management. FTP using Fetch or Transmit, creative effects using jQuery widgets, and other techniques and topics will be discussed. This course will utilize Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Flash and Illustrator, with possible introductions to other software.

COMM398O- Special Topics: Digital Media and Democracy: A survey of theoretical frameworks for understanding contemporary media practices. Emphasis will be place on social media and how digital technologies affect modern democratic advocacy.

COMM398J - Communication & Advanced Digital Imaging: Continuation of COMM398N (although COMM398N is not a prerequisite).  Concentration is on advanced visual imaging, with theme-based projects that incorporate advanced features of Photoshop CC, including raw imaging.

COMM398Q – Social Media Analytics: Students will explore a variety of ways to make social media more than just counting Facebook likes and Twitter followers. Students will develop practical knowledge of analytics and the role social media measurement plays in a communications plan. Students will find, analyze and present social media metrics using tools like Hootsuite and Brandwatch together to show how today’s leading communicators drive conversations with strong analytics and reporting, as well as leveraging the power of social networks. Topics include: Social Media metrics; Social media reports; Social listening/monitoring; Social Media planning

COMM498Q – Sound Lighting & Cinematography in the Digital Media Platform: Film-making is the sum of its parts. In this class we will explore advanced technique in lighting design, sound and cinematography.

COMM498T - Communication and Digital Media: Theory and Practice: Digital platforms and new media are changing the meaning of community, interaction, and place. In this class we will explore mobile theory and conceive of new tools and applications to address evolving mobile technologies.

COMM498N - Creating the Narrative: Genre Filmmaking and Dramatic Structure: First time filmmakers often use genre traditions to break into the profession. In this class we will explore the history, motifs, and technique of the horror, suspense and romantic comedy genres.
