A New Model for Higher Education

The Industry Sector Hubs at The Universities at Shady Grove (USG) represent a transformative model that integrates academic institutions, employers, students, and community partners into a collaborative system aligned with workforce needs. Grounded in the USG 2.0 Strategic Plan, the hubs drive equity-centered, data-informed collaboration focused on career readiness, lifelong learning, and inclusive opportunity. Through this model, USG creates clear pathways to prosperity for learners and helps build a thriving, equitable economy in Montgomery County and beyond.

Purpose

The Hubs forge sustained partnerships between USG, its nine academic institutions, and regional employers to ensure that students’ educational pathways align with real-world workforce demands. In turn, employers gain direct access to a diverse, career-ready talent pool, supporting their growth in a competitive economy.

Each hub focuses on one of four high-demand sectors:

Guiding Standards

The Industry Sector Hubs are tasked with operationalizing elements of the strategic plan guided by the following standards:

  • Academic Innovation & Employer Partnership
Develop and enhance academic programs through direct collaboration with industry to ensure alignment with workforce demands.
  • Career Readiness for All Learners
Integrate essential career competencies into all programs, preparing students to enter and advance in the workforce.
  • Equity as a Foundation
Advance equity in access and outcomes by fostering inclusive pathways and engaging underrepresented populations.
  • Data-Informed Decision Making
Use labor market data, program mapping, and ecosystem analysis to identify gaps, prioritize opportunities, and guide implementation.
  • Systemic Collaboration & Change
Establish USG as a disruptive space for reimagining education, where ideas are tested, iterated, and scaled with student success at the center.
