I first heard about the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) at a transfer fair while attending Frederick Community College. Since I knew that commuting to Towson University would be a daily challenge for me, I was so excited to hear that Towson offered their Elementary Education/Special Education degree closer to my home at USG. After going to USG’s website, I decided to register for the Fall Open House to get more information about the enrollment process. Upon arriving, I instantly fell in love with both the campus and staff, and I couldn’t wait to apply!
Upon graduating with my Associate of Arts in Teaching, I applied to Towson University and selected USG as my preferred campus. I chose to attend USG because of its small class sizes, shorter commute time, and because I would be completing my student teaching in Montgomery County Public Schools - which is a top-rated public school district in Maryland. Not to mention, Towson University is also known for its outstanding teaching program.
During my first semester at USG, I joined the Student Ambassador program. Working as an ambassador gave me the confidence I needed to try other leadership opportunities at USG. Currently, I am the 2020-2021 USG Student Council President, and I couldn’t be more honored to serve my classmates during this challenging time. So far, the Student Council and I have worked diligently to bring awareness to systemic racism, exercising our right to vote, and addressing student needs due to the impact of COVID-19. I have also started a women’s empowerment group called Girls on FIRE!, which serves the diverse population of women here at USG. The purpose of the organization is to provide resources to help foster fierce, independent, resilient, and empowering women.
My career goal after graduation is to get my master’s in educational leadership and become a high school principal. I want students from all backgrounds to know that no matter how their story began, with hard work, a growth mindset, and the right support system - they too can accomplish their goals and change the future of our society.
