EHS supports chemical, biological, or physical laboratory safety and compliance with state, federal, and agency practices, standards, and regulations by providing services related to your home institution’s health and safety plans and procedures, training, or committee approval requirements. Additionally, EHS establishes campus-specific practices to support safety and demonstrate compliance within the educational environment.
New Lab Faculty
- Reach out to EHS to discuss the various activities in your lab.
- Get setup in the SciShield Safety Management Platform – Directors, Lecturers, TAs, and GAs for teaching labs, as well as students for research labs.
- Upload your home institution’s documentation - health and safety plans, committee review and approval, safety training completion records.
- Follow the Lab Instructor Safety Responsibilities expanded checklist.

Institutional Safety Training
Safety training must be taken at your home institution and completion certificates uploaded to SciShield before the start of lab activities. Required trainings need to be completed by lecturers, TAs, and GAs for teaching labs, as well as students for research labs.
Training names vary but will be assigned by your home institution’s health and safety, or committee, departments based on the activities you will be performing or overseeing in the laboratory. If you are unfamiliar with your home institution’s health and safety, or committee training, contact EHS.
Teaching and Research Committee Review
Examples of partner institution teaching and research committees that review and approve projects or protocols include, but are not limited to:
- Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) - biological materials
- Institutional Review Board (IRB) - human subjects and human source material
- Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) – animal care and use
