Four new degree programs will open their doors at USG during the upcoming 2018 – 2019 academic year. The University of Maryland, College Park will bring its B.S. in Information Science and UMBC will bring three new programs, B.S. in Translational Life Sciences Technology, M.P.S. in Technical Management, and M.P.S. in Data Science.
“These programs, like all programs at USG, have been specifically selected and designed to meet the needs of our region’s workforce,” said Stewart Edelstein, Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, University System of Maryland and Executive Director at USG. “USG is proud to work closely with our university partners, and employers in our community, to identify areas of growth and need in healthcare, technology, education and other fields.”
B.S. in Information Science
The University of Maryland iSchool’s Bachelor of Science in Information Science (BSIS) program, also known as InfoSci, provides students with necessary skills and knowledge to anticipate and act upon consequences of new information technologies, systems, services and resources. The program prepares students to design solutions, create systems, and lead teams that bring together information, technology, and people to meet critical individual, organizational, and societal needs. InfoSci curriculum uniquely combines technical skills such as database design, information architecture, web and mobile development, and data analytics with the social sciences, leadership, design, and the humanities. Through coursework, internships, career development events, and professional support, students will build careers that place them in leadership roles in information management, information technology, user-centered design, data analytics, and more.
B.S. in Translational Life Sciences Technology
UMBC’s Bachelor of Science in Translational Life Science Technology (TLST) is a unique degree designed for students who want to be competitive in the bioscience world of today and tomorrow. This degree combines the theory of a traditional life science degree with real-world applications used by scientists in academic and industry research. Students who complete this degree will have a comprehensive understanding of cell biology, biochemistry, lab instrumentation, statistics, epidemiology and biochemical engineering as they develop the diagnostic, therapeutic and vaccine answers to current and emerging health risks. In addition, students will master critical skills such as analytical thinking, data analysis, the ability to work in a team, and data evaluation. These skills, combined with the knowledge of science gained in the TLST program, will provide students with the tools necessary to succeed in the modern era of life sciences and go from “bench-to-bedside.”
M.P.S. in Technical Management
The goal of UMBC's Technical Management program is to develop successful leaders in today’s organization. Our graduates know how to think strategically about leading people in a diverse environment, make sound ethical decisions, and utilize technology to provide a strategic advantage at an appropriate level of risk. In addition, our graduates are prepared to succeed in a rapidly changing world. The M.P.S. in Technical Management program is built around a core set of six courses that provide the foundational knowledge in leadership, communications, ethics and project management. The core courses are supplemented with technically-oriented courses in entrepreneurship, international project management, and organizational leadership.
M.P.S. in Data Science
The Data Science Master’s program at UMBC prepares students from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds for careers in data science. In the core courses, students will gain a thorough understanding of data science through classes that highlight: machine learning, data analysis, data management, ethical and legal considerations, and more. Students will develop an in-depth understanding of the basic computing principles behind data science, to include but not limited to data ingestion, curation and cleaning and the 4Vs of data science: Volume, Variety, Velocity, Veracity, as well as the implicit 5th V -- Value. Through applying principles of data science to the analysis of problems within specific domains expressed through the program pathways, students will gain practical, real world industry relevant experience.
