On December 17, 2013, 41 students from the University of Maryland School of Nursing at the Universities at Shady Grove received their class pin, to mark their graduation with a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing.
The University of Maryland School of Nursing class pin has been a tradition since 1894, when students selected a design by Tiffany’s of New York. Until 1970, only members of the Alumni Association were permitted to wear the pin; however, in 1970 the Alumni Association generously offered their pin for use as the official insignia of the School. Since then, a variation of the pin has been presented to graduates to mark the successful completion of their academic degree requirements and transition into the profession of nursing. In accordance with tradition, the graduates were “pinned” by a person of their choosing, which included parents, spouses, children, and extended family.
