More than 200 scholarship recipients and the local organizations and individuals who contributed to 38 scholarship funds were honored during the Universities at Shady Grove’s (USG) annual Scholarship and Donor Recognition Luncheon on November 16.
“Lack of financial resources is perhaps the major challenge that students face,” said Dr. Stewart Edelstein, executive director of The Universities at Shady Grove. “For many students, the combination of difficult economic times and reduced scholarship assistance from federal, state and institutional sources has vastly increased the affordability gap of obtaining a baccalaureate degree. This is why we so are deeply grateful to the individuals and organizations that have so generously contributed funds to support students at USG in achieving their educational goals.”
Two students enrolled in programs at USG spoke at this year’s luncheon on behalf of their fellow scholarship recipients: Jonathan Lapkoff, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in the University of Baltimore’s Simulation and Digital Entertainment program at USG, and Jennifer Vasquez, who will be graduating with her bachelor’s degree in December from the University of Maryland, College Park, communication program. Both Lapkoff and Vasquez persevered to go on and pursue their college degrees after surviving major illnesses during their younger years and spoke both to the importance of both the financial support they are receiving, thanks to their scholarships, and of the many unique opportunities available to them as students on the USG campus.
