The Epsilon Chapter of the international professional pharmacy fraternity, Lamda Kappa Sigma (LKS), hosted the first-ever “Vermonster Challenge”, a student-run ice cream eating contest and fundraiser, at the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) on Tuesday, October 6. Three hundred dollars were raised for Project Hope, an organization that provides medical supplies, volunteers and health education to communities in need across the globe.
Sweet Success
Teams of five raced to consume 4 pounds of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, with hot fudge, whip cream and a load of candy toppings. The winning team, nursing students, David and the I Scream Chicks, polished off their bucket of treats in just three minutes and thirty-six seconds.
“Giving back and helping others is an important mission of the pharmacy community,” said Alex Rouse, Doctor of Pharmacy student at USG and Treasurer of the Epsilon LKS Chapter. “We are happy that this fundraiser was not only a success in terms of raising money, but also a ton of fun.”
Flavors of USG
Participants included a wide range of members of the USG community, including students from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, the University of Maryland School of Nursing, UMBC’s Psychology program, the University of Maryland, College Park, and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. A team of staff members from USG’s Office of Student Services also participated.
In addition to the grand prize, a “best-name” award was given to the Phunky Chunky Monkies for their creativity.
