Dr. Ricardo A. Brown Also Named Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, University System of Maryland   

The Universities at Shady Grove (USG) has named Dr. Ricardo A. Brown as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, University System of Maryland, and Chief Academic Programs Officer at USG.  In this newly created position, Dr. Brown will focus on curriculum planning and college access initiatives within Montgomery County.  In doing so, he will work closely with Montgomery College and Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) to create education and career pathways in the science, technology, health and engineering fields. These programs place special emphasis on strengthening the pipeline for minority and first generation college student populations.

“We are pleased to welcome Ricardo Brown to USG,” said Stewart Edelstein, Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, University System of Maryland and Executive Director at USG. “His unique mix of experience in academia, biomedical research and business makes him the ideal individual to help grow USG.  As we enter our second decade, we are focused on increasing access to educational opportunities for our region’s students and continuing to meet the workforce needs of the County.”  

Prior to joining USG, Dr. Brown was Associate Vice President for Sponsored Programs at Howard University, where he served as the official signing agent on all university grants, contracts and cooperative agreements submitted and received on behalf of the university. For six years, Brown was at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), as a Health Scientist Administrator for a portfolio studying the Cardiovascular Effect of Alcohol Consumption and Minority Health & Health Disparities. He also served as Professor and Chairman of Biology at Morgan State University and Assistant and Associate Professor of Physiology, School of Medicine at Wayne State University. Dr. Brown also ran his own business, a small-disadvantaged business consulting company with services in federal grants and contracts, program evaluation and research market analysis. Dr. Brown received his B.A. in Biology from Oakwood College and his Ph.D. in Physiology & Biophysics from Howard University. He was also an NIH Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine and at the National Institute on Aging.

“Over the past 10 years, more than 3,500 students have received bachelor’s degrees from programs at USG,” said Brown. “Many of those students would not have had access to these higher education opportunities without this innovative model.
