Getting to USG by Public Transportation

Getting to The Universities at Shady Grove (USG) is easier than ever with a variety of public transportation options. Whether you're commuting from nearby Metro stations or traveling from other parts of Montgomery County or surrounding counties, there are several convenient and affordable ways to reach campus. Use Google Maps, Transit App, or the Ride On Trip Planner to map out your route.

Express Shuttle Routes: Pink and Lime Lines

Pink and Lime shuttle lines cut down on travel time to campus and operate during peak hours. These shuttles are part of Montgomery County's Ride On extRa service.

  • Pink Line – Connects USG directly to the Shady Grove Metro Station (Red Line).
  • Lime Line – Connects USG and key areas in Germantown and Gaithersburg, ideal if you're coming from the north.

Ride On Bus Service

Montgomery County Ride On buses stop right at USG’s campus:

  • Route 43: Shady Grove-Traville Transit Center-Fallsgrove Center
  • Route 66: Shady Grove-Traville Transit Center
  • Route 67: Shady Grove-Traville Transit Center

These buses also connect you to nearby Metro stations and other local destinations. Download the Ride On Real Time app to track your bus live and use a student SmartTrip card for discounted fares.

Metro Access

If you’re coming from D.C. or farther out in Maryland, take the Red Line to the Shady Grove Metro Station. From there, you can:

  • Hop on the Pink Line shuttle for a ride to campus
  • Take a short ride on a Ride On bus or bike/scooter

Biking & Scooters

USG is bike- and scooter-friendly! You’ll find racks and designated parking areas around campus. Consider combining your public transit ride with a scooter or bike for the last leg of your trip. Capital Bikeshare stations are available both at the Shady Grove Metro Station and right on the USG campus, making it easy to grab a bike and ride to or from campus.

Commuting from Frederick, Howard, or Prince George’s County?

  • Frederick County: Take the MARC Train (Brunswick Line) to Rockville Station, then transfer to Ride On or Ride On Flex to get to USG.
  • Howard County: Consider the RTA of Central Maryland to connect with Metro or MARC at Greenbelt or College Park, then take the Red Line to Shady Grove and transfer to a Ride On bus or shuttle.
  • Prince George’s County: Use the Green Line Metro to transfer to the Red Line at Fort Totten or Gallery Place, ride to Shady Grove, and use a Ride On bus or shuttle to campus.
