The UMES Campus Kitchens Project at the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) was established in 2007. Over 300 meals per month are prepared for families in need, who are a part of The Dwelling Place. CKP at UMES also supplys healthy snacks for a backpack program with Nourish Now, a food recovery program. Together with Nourish Now they have hosted several cooking events that prepare meals for the needy. CKP at UMES also sends meals to the Montgomery County Men’s Shelter in Rockville several times a year. Students have planned, prepared and delivered over 20,000 meals. But they don’t stop at preparing and delivering meals. Students are offered numerous opportunities to conduct presentations at conferences, and attend national meetings on issues regarding hunger solutions. The UMES Campus Kitchens Project at USG has produced a Civic Engagement seminar on "Hunger in Our Community," and competed in "Hunger Solutions," a campus-wide competition, which offered community agencies creative ideas to combat hunger.

CKP at UMES is a service learning project embedded into a professional development course series. CKP at UMES connects academic course work by offering a real-world application of business principles and practices. During their senior year, students take on leadership roles and gain management experience to transition from college students to industry employees. In addition, the program also reinforces community partnerships and civic engagement.
