Universities at Shady Grove Selected as Recipient of Gazette of Politics and Business First Exceptional 53 Business Award

First Time Program Attracts Large Crowd at Bethesda Awards Ceremony

Gaithersburg, Maryland -- The Gazette of Politics and Business released its list of the 53 top businesses and organizations in the State of Maryland. The awards program, the first by the P&B Gazette, acknowledges the top 53 businesses and organizations in Maryland based on criteria that included the recipient company's annual revenue and employee growth as well as noteworthy product or service innovations, community service efforts and how the companies portrayed themselves as "good places to work".

The first annual awards ceremony held at the Doubletree Hotel in Bethesda attracted a large crowd of appreciative attendees eager to celebrate the accomplishments of the top 53 companies. Speeches by David Edgerly, Director of Economic Development for the State of Maryland, key sponsor of the program, and Cliff Chiet, Publisher of the Politics and Business Gazette, preceded a dinner and networking activities at the Hotel.

Mr. Edgerly stated, "I applaud these exceptional Maryland businesses that are consistently on the leading edge of innovation and doing their part to help through their pro-active community service programs. We owe a lot to them for the job creation they generate which helps keep Maryland at the top of the list of the best places to work in the country."

The Universities at Shady Grove (USG), the University System campus in Rockville offering 60 degree programs from 9 leading Maryland public universities, was recognized for its exceptional growth, innovation and community service programs.

"In the past eight years we've grown to serve over 3,000 graduate and undergraduate students a year," says Stewart Edelstein, Associate Chancellor for the University System of Maryland and USG Executive Director. "We opened the Camille Kendall Academic Center, an award-winning green building which allowed us to double our enrollment capacity to 6,000 students while maintaining an atmosphere that features small classes, personal attention and state-of-the-art facilities, all designed to ensure student success. Being named to the Gazette's list of 53 Exceptional Maryland is a gratifying recognition of our progress and contributions to our students and our community."
