On December 7, 2010, 42 students from the University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Nursing of the Universities at Shady Grove received their class pin, celebrating their graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing. This was the first Nursing class at USG to start their studies in the spring semester.

The University of Maryland School of Nursing class pin has been a tradition since 1894. Until 1970, only members of the Alumni Association were permitted to wear the pin; however, in 1970, the Alumni Association generously offered their pin for use as the official insignia of the School. Since then, it has been presented to graduates to mark the successful completion of their academic degree requirements and transition into the nursing field as professionals. In accordance with tradition, the graduates were “pinned” by the person they chose for the pinning, which included parents, spouses, children, and extended family.
