Bethesda Magazine Green Awards and Maryland Clean
Energy Center Underscore Campus Commitment to Sustainability

Building on its longstanding effort to facilitate, educate and raise awareness of sustainability in all areas of campus life, the Universities at Shady Grove (USG, www.shadygrove.umd.edu) has been recognized with two environmental honors: a Bethesda Magazine Green Award and a Maryland Clean Energy Award.

“Thinking ‘green’ is integral to everything we do,” said Stewart Edelstein, Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, University System of Maryland and Executive Director at USG. “As a ‘learning laboratory’ where students, staff and faculty work together to
lead new green initiatives that impact the entire region, we’re honored to be
recognized for our environmental stewardship with so many other deserving green
innovators.”

Presented by Bethesda Green (www.bethesdagreen.org) on Oct. 7, the inaugural Bethesda Magazine Green Awards honor the region’s environmental champions in seven categories across Montgomery County and Northwest Washington, D.C. USG was recognized as a non-profit organization that has significantly incorporated green practices into its culture and operations. For more information Click Here

The first Maryland Clean Energy awards, presented by the Maryland Clean Energy Center (www.mdcleanenergy.org) on Oct. 4, applaud sustainability leaders that can help ignite Maryland’s clean energy economy. Winning the Partnership Award along with Montgomery County, the honor underscores USG’s core emphasis on collaboration throughout all aspects of operation.

Stemming from the design and construction of the award-winning, LEED® Gold Camille Kendall Academic Center—the largest green higher education building in Maryland—USG’s commitment to sustainable living has grown in recent years with a new green parking garage, which incorporates LED lighting, an energy-efficient elevator, solar shades and a rainwater collection system. Beyond USG’s environmentally conscious
infrastructure, the Green Team composed of faculty, staff and students furthers
the cause through education and action. Initiatives such as the Green Lecture
Series, socially-responsible food sourcing, curriculum development, tours, and
data analysis inspire students and partners to live as good stewards and to share
their commitment as they continue their career paths.
