Three Universities at Shady Grove Partners Address Cooking, Health and Everyday Science with Transitional Housing Residents from The Dwelling Place

The March 13 Event was Produced by UMES Campus Kitchen Project at USG and Featured Interactive Basic Kitchen Skills Demonstrations, Healthy Snacks and Everyday Science Discussions

The three partners that participated were the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hotel and Restaurant Management Program, University of Maryland College Park Biological Sciences and Public Health Sciences programs, and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County Social Work Program.

The event was led by The University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s Hotel and Restaurant Management Program at USG, to present a first of its kind event for 16 families from The Dwelling Place. The event provided them the opportunity to learn new skills in cooking and everyday science to help encourage a healthier lifestyle. Participants received instruction in everything from basic knife and cooking skills to proper hand-washing techniques, stain removal tips and food safety. Everyone received a healthy snack and participated in a nutrition discussion. Childcare was provided by students in the UB Social Work Program.
