Cindy Zammit’s world was rocked the day she found out her five-year-old son had leukemia. Wanting to do everything possible to protect her child, Cindy made it her mission to research and ask tough questions to medical professionals treating him. During the years of her son’s treatment, she leaned heavily on the nurses, and came away with a newfound respect – and passion – for the nursing profession.
Fast forward several years and Cindy’s world returned to normal. Her son was now a healthy, exuberant child. Yet Cindy’s passion for nursing did not abate. She decided to pursue a degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Nursing at the Universities at Shady Grove. The program, which offers cutting edge facilities and faculty who are leaders in their field, is designed to accommodate career-changers like Cindy. Following her graduation in 2009, Cindy is now happily pursuing her calling as a nurse at the National Rehabilitation Center in Washington, D.C.
