Dr. Stewart Edelstein, Executive Director of the Universities at Shady Grove, was awarded an honorary Associate of Arts in Public Service degree from Montgomery College (MC) during their 2012 Commencement exercise on May 18th. Honorary degrees are presented annually to a selection of contributors, philanthropists, and distinguished friends of Montgomery College.

“It is an incredible honor to receive this recognition from Montgomery College, a long-standing and integral partner to the Universities at Shady Grove,” said Dr. Stewart Edelstein. "I proudly stand among the three other leading members of the Montgomery County community, Dr. Hercules Pinkney, President Emeritus, Montgomery College, Charles Atwell, CEO of Innovative Business Interiors and Suzan Jenkins, CEO, Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County in receiving this honor."

"It was a delight to participate in recognizing the achievements of over 800 talented and hard-working students, many of whom will be coming to the Universities at Shady Grove this Fall," added Dr. Edelstein.

The Associate of Arts in Public Service honorary degree recognizes people who have acquired a national or international reputation in a selected field, have risen to a position of prominence, hold a distinguished record of public and community service, or have made a notable donation of time, talent, or a gift to MC.

The honorary degree program was established in 1996 during MC’s 50th Anniversary Convocation. Each recipient is approved by the Montgomery College Board of Trustees.
