Center for Health and Homeland Security Expands to Universities at Shady Grove
The University of Maryland Center for Health and Homeland Security (CHHS) has opened new offices on the campus of the Universities at Shady Grove (USG), establishing a local presence among the growing number of CHHS clients in the Washington, D.C. metro region.
CHHS worked closely with the Chancellor’s Office for the University System of Maryland and USG to secure the space. While CHHS has staff on site with clients throughout the Baltimore and D.C. area, the USG location in Montgomery County marks the Center’s first expansion of its own offices off the University of Maryland, Baltimore campus. On top of the geographic advantages, CHHS will have access to USG’s state-of-the-art conference facilities, students, and other resources that will be valuable to the Center’s projects with clients.
“Through our new office location at the Universities at Shady Grove, CHHS’s staff of 50 professionals has now greatly improved its ability to provide our extensive emergency management advisory services to those institutions charged with the critically important work of protecting the health and safety of the National Capital Region,” said Michael Greenberger, JD, founder and director of CHHS and professor at the University of Maryland School of Law.
“We are delighted to welcome the University of Maryland Center for Health and Homeland Security to the USG campus and look forward to supporting them in their important work with the region’s top emergency responders,” said Stewart Edelstein, Executive Director of USG. “CHHS’s presence on campus will also afford USG students increased opportunities to engage in leading-edge planning, training, and research.”
The robust list of CHHS clients in the D.C. region includes the Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, Montgomery College, and the cities of Gaithersburg, Rockville, Takoma Park, and Chevy Chase. In the District, CHHS clients include the D.C. Homeland Security & Emergency Management Agency and the D.C. Department of Health. CHHS is also working with all the hospitals in Montgomery County and Prince Georges County in preparation for a D.C. region-wide full-scale exercise in October.
