Skanska Wins Two Awards for Work on Camille Kendall Academic Center at the Universities at Shady Grove
ROCKVILLE, Md. (October 2008) - Skanska USA Building Inc. announced today that it won two awards from the Washington, D.C. chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC). Both awards recognize work on the Camille Kendall Academic Center at the Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville, Maryland.

The 195,000-square-foot academic center won AGC's 2008 Washington Contractor Awards for New Construction ($75-$150 million) and Best Sustainable Project: New Construction.

At the time of the building's completion, the Camille Kendall Academic Center was the largest building in the state of Maryland to achieve LEED® Gold certification and is the first project within the University of Maryland system to attain that level of LEED certification. While the original target was for LEED Silver certification, innovative thinking on the part of the project architect, Cannon Design and Skanska's project team - such as finding more sustainable materials within budget - enabled the higher designation.

Also recognized by the awards was Skanska's workmanship. Coordinating delivery of a variety of special materials was required to keep the project on-time and on-budget. Even with a successful program to manage those issues, construction itself presented challenges,. The building's design included no square corners and none of its elevations were a standard height.

"We were proud to deliver a building of this quality to the Universities at Shady Grove and we are thrilled to be recognized for the work that went into it," said Chuck Brawley, Skanska's Area General Manager. "These awards really highlight the quality of our project teams and the dedication they put into every job."
