Andrew Sherman hates waste!

Starting with that basic principle, Sherman, a corporate attorney and R. H. Smith School of Business instructor for the Universities at Shady Grove’s interdisciplinary “Entrepreneurship and New Venture,” delivered a powerful message about business growth and innovation in an inspiring talk he delivered recently at TEDx University of Nevada.

Sherman, who has taught at USG for 14 years, teamed up with USG’s Committee on Collaboration, Interprofessional and Interdisciplinary Education Strategies (CIPES) in Fall 2012 to lead the “Entrepreneurship and New Venture Creation” course. The innovative “shared course” is designed to bring together students from all majors to gain the entrepreneurial skills they need to run a successful business. Sherman is a full-time transactional lawyer at Jones Day Partners, a long-time educator, and an author of 17 strategy books, including Harvesting Intangible Assets, which he mentioned during his TedxTalk.

As one of USG’s first instructors, Andrew J. Sherman’s TedxTalk is a reflection of the innovative knowledge that he brings to the classroom. His message ties perfectly with USG’s mission to continue to grow and innovate as a higher education leader in Montgomery County, and beyond. Collaboration is key at USG and Andrew J. Sherman encourages his students to collaborate, across disciplines like biology and business, to develop winning business strategies and successful companies.

The expert strategist and educator shared several business success stories in his TedxTalk that reflect his enthusiasm to provide entrepreneurs the knowledge and skills they need to succeed. He implores business people to not only recycle ideas, but to become “entrepreneurial environmentalists” and “intellectual capital agrarians,” who are advocates for their organization’s growth. He ended his TEDxTalk by encouraging businesses to end the waste cycle and reuse their assets: “I hate waste. And I think you should too.”
