On Thursday, October 9th The Universities at Shady Grove (USG) hosted The Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) Bethesda Speed Networking event. The event brought together 15 AFCEA Bethesda scholarship recipients and 15 mentors from 9 different member organizations.

Sandra Samuel, AFCEA Bethesda Vice President of Education and Vice President, Operations at Lockheed Martin Information Systems and Global Solutions, opened the event by saying, “It is exciting to see so many students involved in STEM related programs. This speed networking event is an opportunity for students to talk with different mentors, make connections and see what career choices exist within STEM industries.” Sandra then introduced the keynote speaker, Stephanie Hill, President at Lockheed Martin Information Systems and Global Solutions. Stephanie has over 27 years of experience in technology and is very passionate about the future of STEM careers. “New technology is being developed every day and by 2015 over 8 million STEM jobs will be available. It is getting harder to find qualified students to fill these positions.” The AFCEA Bethesda Speed Networking event was created to help connect students in STEM programs with leaders in STEM organizations.

All of the mentors were very excited to be a part of the event. Andy Patrichuk, Partner at Deep Water Point, advised students to “Take advantage of mentorship programs and internships.” Beth Hennon, Lockheed Martin Ethics Analysis Senior Manager, said “You may not know what career path you are going to take, but don’t be afraid to take risks and try new things, you may discover a whole new world of opportunities.” Michael Priddy, CEO of Intervise and former AFCEA Bethesda Vice President of Education, reflected on the students he met, “The students who graduate from programs at USG, come to employers work-ready. Several have already experienced hardships and learned how to overcome them. I have had the unique opportunity to help students achieve their education goals and see them succeed in their careers.”

USG and AFCEA Bethesda firmly believe in preparing students for careers in STEM fields by offering internships and mentorship programs that provide real-world experience. The return on investment in a STEM education for students, businesses, and educators alike comes through loud and clear. The dire need for well-qualified students to fill the ever-expanding demand for STEM jobs is just beginning. But hopefully with events like the AFCEA Bethesda Speed Networking, students will rise to the challenge, develop the skills, and enter the workforce well-prepared and ready to fill these positions.
