In a collaborative effort to make science exciting, Universities at Shady Grove joined Johns Hopkins University Montgomery County Campus and neighbors in the Shady Grove Life Sciences Center to open their doors and labs to seventh-grade students for a fun-filled, educational day of science and medicine.
The 5th annual Frontiers in Science and Medicine Day was held on Friday, Oct. 25. Students from Gaithersburg Middle School and Loiederman Middle School spent part of the day at Johns Hopkins University Montgomery County Campus, where they participated in hands-on science and medicine activities.
Students also spent part of the day visiting a local laboratory or hospital to experience what doctors and scientists do each day. Lab activities included viewing brain specimen under a microscope; learning how DNA is used in forensics; watching mosquitoes feed on blood to learn about malaria; and learning about proper techniques for making intravenous preparations.
Lab tours were held at BioReliance; Blanchette Rockefeller Neurosciences Institute; Institute for Bioscience & Biotechnology Research; J. Craig Venter Institute; Johns Hopkins University Wet Lab; National Center for the Advancement of Translational Sciences; Sanaria; Shady Grove Adventist Hospital; TruBios; TissueGene; and the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy at the Universities at Shady Grove.
Others partners in the event included MdBio Foundation; Johns Hopkins University Center for Biotechnology Education; Montgomery College; Navigant; Qiagen; Salisbury University; University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) and Vaxin.
