Overview

The M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction, Specialty: Mathematics Education has a 30-credit, 10-course curriculum that prepares certified elementary, middle, special education, and TESOL educators to become highly qualified mathematics teachers (grades 4-9). The M.Ed.’s cohort structure is designed to help build a professional learning community and can be completed in three years of continuous part-time enrollment. The program consists of coursework in mathematics content, mathematics education, curriculum-based integrated content and pedagogy courses, as well as an action research course.

In addition to earning the M.Ed. from the University of Maryland, the Maryland State Department of Education has recognized this program as providing a suitable set of courses to be used by certified teachers seeking an add-on endorsement in middle grades mathematics. This recognition permits teachers to submit credits this program’s coursework as part of the 30 credits needed to request an add-on endorsement to their elementary certification for middle school mathematics.

The program is offered through the EdTerps Learning Academy, housed in the College of Education. The EdTerps Learning Academy provides flexible learning opportunities for working professionals in the field of Education, offering programs designed for career advancement while accommodating personal and professional responsibilities.
