Brief Housing Guide

MPDU (Moderately Priced Dwelling Unit) – Rockville Specific
The MPDU program in Rockville allows people that fall within a certain income range to rent apartments within Rockville for a discounted rate. The first step is to obtain an MPDU certificate by filling out the application and turning in supplemental documents such as pay stubs and tax returns to the Rockville office either in person or via fax. The certificate is then valid for 2 years and during this time you are able to rent an apartment at a great discount – For example, ALL 1 bedroom apartments cost $1,105 a month. Once the 2 years are up, you are welcome to reapply for the MPDU certificate as long as you still fall within the income range limits. In order to obtain an actual lease, you will still need to pay an application fee and meet credit score requirements.
Take Notice: Two unrelated people can apply for an MPDU together in which case you can split the price of the monthly rental fees. However, all of the people living in the apartment have to sign the lease.

MPDU (Moderately Priced Dwelling Unit) – Montgomery County
The MPDU program for Montgomery County (just as Rockville) allows you to rent an apartment at a discounted rate as long as you fall within a specified income range. However, for the Montgomery County MPDU, you have to apply for the MPDU discount directly to the apartment complex as opposed to sending an application to a specific office like in the Rockville MPDU program. In the Montgomery County program, you have to apply for the MPDU discount AND a lease at each apartment property. The MPDU discount is over once your lease is over at which time you will need to reapply for a lease if you still fall under the income requirements.
Take Notice: Apartments in the program don’t have a standardized price which means that in Chevy Chase a 1 bedroom apartment will cost $1,370 while in Clarksburg a 1 bedroom apartment will cost $1,181 a month.
