What is an microinternship?

A microinternship is a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development on a short-term basis. Microinternships give students the opportunity to gain valuable applied experience and give employers the opportunity to guide and evaluate talent, with added flexibility for both the student and employer.

 HIRE A MICROINTERN

What are the employer advantages of having a microintern?

  • Larger applicant pool. Hiring a microintern allows you a broader choice of candidates. No longer are employers limited to only those interns who have semester-long availability.
  • Help only when needed. For small businesses who wonder whether they have enough work to support a full-time internship program, a microinternship makes it easy to utilize interns on a per-project basis.
  • Test-drive the talent. It's a human resources reality: A new employee makes a solid impression in the interview, but then just doesn't gel with your current team or your company's way of doing things. Because of this, hiring someone as an intern is the most effective way to evaluate their skills and potential as an employee.
  • Enhance perspective.  New people bring with them novel perspectives, fresh ideas, and specialized strengths, and skill sets. These augment the abilities of your professional workforce.
  • Gain brand advocates. Hiring an microintern helps spread the word about your company.

 EMPLOYER ORIENTATION FOR MICROINTERNSHIP MODEL

What specific activities will students perform in this microinternship model?

Activities involved with a microinternship can vary widely depending on the scope of the project.  Examples of microinternship projects include developing a social media presence for a company, reviewing communications, revising the organization’s website, undertaking short surveys, or completing a short-term research project.
