Ensure that you understand what you will need to do to access computing resources before you begin working remotely. It is our recommendation that you test your access to these applications from off-campus before planning to work remotely.

COVID-19 Cyber Scams

  • Avoid clicking on links in unsolicited emails and be wary of email attachments. See Using Caution with Email Attachments and Avoiding Social Engineering and Phishing Scams for more information.
  • Use trusted sources—such as legitimate, government websites—for up-to-date, fact-based information about COVID-19.
  • Do not reveal personal or financial information in an email, and do not respond to email solicitations for this information.
  • Verify a charity’s authenticity before making donations. Review the Federal Trade Commission’s page on Charity Scams for more information.
USG Logon ID Services

Your USG Logon ID is used to access the various resources that require authentication.

Administering your USG Logon ID can be performed by visiting Self-Service Portal.

In addition, the Self-Service Portal will allow you to reset your password by using your account security questions. If you do not recall your answers to the security questions, please contact the USG IT Service Desk by emailing usg-itservicedesk@umd.edu.

Voice Services

Voicemail Accessibility

Office phone extensions with an active voicemail box will be able to retrieve voicemails remotely by dialing 301-738-6006 and following the prompts.

 

Extended Call Service (EC-500)

USG's Office of Information Technology offers the EC-500 service providing office extensions the ability to extend their call to an external phone number. If you would like to enable this feature, contact the USG IT Service Desk by emailing usg-itservicedesk@umd.edu.

Cloud Storage

Cloud storage services provide an alternative location to where your data can be stored and accessed. USG's and UMD's Data Classification Standards should be reviewed regarding what type of data should be stored on each type of service. You can find a list of prohibited data types that you should upload here.

Box

Data Classification Level: Black | Level 4

Box is a cloud-based storage and collaboration system that provides a Web interface for uploading, downloading, sharing, and discussing files. It is designed to work on Macs, PCs, smartphones, and tablets.

To access your files directly from your computer, you may consider installing Box Drive.

Google Drive

Data Classification Level: Red | Level 3

G Suite Drive is online storage integrated with your university G Suite account. Save your work files to Drive and use Docs, Sheets, and Slides to edit them. You can share with co-workers and edit the same file at the same time, showing revisions and comments.

Google Drive is an application that can be installed on your computer allowing access directly from your computer instead of a web browser.
