Dear Students, Faculty and Staff –

Welcome all new and returning students, faculty, and staff. What an exciting time this is for the Universities at Shady Grove! We have the largest incoming class ever, and in May we had our largest graduating class ever. Throughout the year, I look forward to getting to know the new faces on campus and catching up with those returning.

USG is a dynamic and diverse learning community made up of faculty, staff and students from our nine universities. Our mission and passion is helping students reach their fullest potential. We are breaking old molds and creating vibrant new ones. We are preparing students for the global market, not just preparing them to graduate. Students here realize that challenging academics and innovative internships are paramount to achieving success. Students also know that being involved on campus is an important part of making connections and building friendships.

I invite you to explore and take advantage of our full-service campus. Our Office of Student Services offers everything from resume help, tutoring, workshops and counseling to student organizations, events, internships, financial aid and scholarships. We are also proud to announce the opening of our new Office of Veterans’ Resources; this space will be exclusively available for veterans to connect to other vets, relax, and study. USG not only provides academic services but opportunities to get involved in our thriving student life. There are over 40 clubs and activities that you can participate in, along with working out in the gym, taking free fitness classes, eating a delicious meal at the Green Grove Café, studying in our state-of-the-art media center, or enjoying any of our other campus amenities.

USG continues to move forward with the next phase of expansion. Development of the new campus entrance will begin in a few weeks and construction of a new parking garage will start in early 2015. Plans to design and build a fourth academic building are underway. The $162 million, 220,000 square-foot, Biomedical Sciences and Engineering (BSE) education facility is slated to break ground in 2016 and open in fall of 2018. The BSE will allow USG and its USM partner universities to expand degree opportunities in healthcare and biosciences, engineering, and STEMM education. With the addition of the BSE, USG will be able to expand its state-of-the-art laboratories, active learning classrooms, clinical training facilities, academic offices, and an array of student services.

I welcome you again and wish you much success throughout the year. Please take full advantage of all that we have to offer here. I hope that you find your experience at USG to be a rewarding and enriching one.
