News and Announcements
Newsletter created by Stacie Hering, Kendall Alumni, 2011.
Introduction
Greetings Universities at Shady Grove Alumni and welcome to the first edition of the Kendall Scholars Alumni Quarterly Newsletter! You are receiving this because you are among the select group that has been identified as exceptional students and leaders through the Camille and Clifford Kendall Endowed Scholarship. As USG celebrates its 10th graduating class this year, the number of Kendall Scholars has grown to be truly impressive! Therefore, at the last meeting Kendall meeting this year, Clifford offered the idea that it was time for us to organize. He challenged us to consider how we could translate the opportunities we had received through this scholarship, by both helping each other and supporting future generations of students at USG. This newsletter will serve as means to help us organize and spread information about upcoming events and initiatives. All contributions are welcome! If you would like to submit something or be considered for a member profile, please contact Raimonda Nuredini at rnuredin@umd.edu.
Meeting Notes
The first planning meeting for the Kendall Scholars Alumni Network was held at USG on Tuesday, June 7th from 5:00-6:00PM. Items discussed included the development of a Kendall Scholar initiated scholarship, possible outreach efforts, fundraising, connection opportunities (see below for more detail). Additionally, we began to discuss how we might like our network to look, including the possible creation of a position for Kendall Alumni liaison/ambassador. If you have any thoughts, please make sure to contact Raimonda TODAY!
Scholarship Development
One of the most important topics discussed at the meeting was the development of a scholarship for Shady Grove students that would be planned and executed by the Kendall Scholars. While brainstorming possible requirements for the scholarship, the meeting attendees isolated the following criteria:
- 3.0 GPA or above
- Exceptions can be made with an outstanding recommendation from a teacher/supervisor/volunteer coordinator
- Student must be currently working at least part time (15-20 hours or more)
- Student must be taking a minimum of 6 credit hours per semester
- Student must have performed community service within the last two years
As discussed, the scholarship would be
- Open to any USG student (junior/senior) not receiving the Camille and Clifford Kendall Endowed Scholarship
- One student per year, one-time award of $500 in the Fall
- Student have the option to take advantage of the same opportunities as Kendall Scholars (mentoring, Kendall Scholars meetings, networking opportunities)
- Awarded student may reapply in the second year
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOA) for this scholarship will be modeled on that created by the USG Student Council for their service scholarship created this year. A draft will be presented at the next planning meeting; however, it is not finalized! If you have any questions, contributions, or concerns, please make sure that you attend the next meeting or contact Raimonda.
Outreach/Brainstorming
The following are possible ideas to build the Kendall Scholars Alumni Network and raise money for our new scholarship!
- MC/USG Student Panel
- Fall picnic table
- 5K around USG
- Bistro at the Grove – Networking Night with the Executive Board
If you have additional ideas or are interested in participating in any of the above, please contact Raimonda!
